Plant a Tree

Choral, SSAA, piano
Words by, Lucy Larcom (1824-1893)

This piece was written for the Overland High School Choralairs. Their director, Martin Jacob, was retiring after 40 years, and this piece was slated to be on his last regular concert with his choirs. This poetry, by Lucy Larcom, seemed a perfect fit for the occasion.

The poem is about planting a tree but reaping the rewards from the planting for years after. The fruits of a teacher’s labor they may never see, but they are valuable and important nonetheless.

The piece was written for an auditioned, freshman treble choir. It has piano accompaniment and soli for soprano and alto.
