Outwitted
Unison, piano
Words by, Edwin Markham (1852-1940)

Written for the West Jefferson Middle School seventh grade choir. Their direction wanted a theme of inclusion. We both agreed that Edwin Markham's Outwitted was a great fit. This piece is written with spoken sections. The choir is welcome to use either the suggested words and phrases listed, or they are welcome to create their own words and phrases. They may personalize the piece in this way to tell their own stories. This piece was written for a specific choir, but I have added a couple of optional notes that can be sung in place of lower notes if the piece happens to be sung by a younger choir.

There is also a two-part version of Outwitted that may be purchased here.

Outwitted                                                                         He drew a circle that shut me out –                             Heretic, rebel, a thing to flout.                                            Be Love and I had the wit to win:                                  We drew a circle that took him in!

[Children's pieces are priced slightly more per copy, but each copy comes with permission to use for the whole children's choir without the need to buy multiple copies. Children's pieces are only sold as a PDF download.]
