I Am Wild
Choral, SSA, unaccompanied
Words by, Sara Teasdale (1884-1933)
Sara Teasdale was a prolific poet, and her work is some of my favorite to set. Her imagery is vivid and her words are lyrical.
The piece juxtaposes the words “I am wild” with lyrical lines and melismas. When I read the poetry, I thought of all the women that I know who attend school or raise families or work challenging jobs or many who do all at the same time, but they still maintain a wild and adventurous spirit. Often, it seems, that we define women too narrowly. This piece explores the beauty in woman’s wild soul.
