Do Not Weep for Me
Choral, SATB, Piano
Text - Luke 23: 27, 28, 33, 34
Written for the Cameron United Methodist Church Choir for Good Friday Service, “Do Not Weep for Me” sets text surrounding Jesus' crucifixion. The piece is set in Db Dorian mode and evokes an ancient church feel with chant-like motives and open fifths. The piece focuses on Jesus' selfless words in his last few hours before his death. The King James Version of the Bible states that the group went to “the place called Calvary.” Other versions called it, “The Skull,” which is a translation of Golgotha. This piece uses the latter.
"And a great multitude of the people followed Him, and women who also mourned and lamented Him. But Jesus, turning to them, said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. And when they had come to the place called Calvary, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right hand and the other on the left. Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.” - Luke 23: 27, 28, 33, 34 (King James Version)
