A Winter Ride

Choral, SATB, unaccompanied
Words by, Amy Lowell (1874-1925)

Pulitzer-prize winning poet, Amy Lowell (1874-1925), was one of the foremost Imagist poets of her time. Though born into a prominent Massachusetts family, Lowell was not allowed to attend college because it was not deemed something appropriate for a young woman. She became an avid reader and book collector and eventually a respected poet.

A Winter Ride is an explosion of unconstrained joy from a horseback or sleigh ride through the winter countryside. Lowell paints a irresistible picture that spreads her joy to her readers. This setting has attempted to put that joy to music with its fast-paced, “galloping” rhythm and explosive “joys” throughout.

Run Time and Level

This piece runs about 4 minutes 15 seconds. It was written for High School and Collegiate choirs.
